WINDHOEK – The Board of Governors of the Namibia Premier League held a two-day Strategic Development Workshop at Heja Lodge from July 17 to 18, to map the way towards professionalization. The workshop, which saw 30 participants from clubs, the management and finance committees, sponsors and partners, was facilitated by Danny Meyer and Claudine Moutone from SME Compete. Hollards Namibia and FNB Namibia financially supported the cost of the workshop. The workshop brought together various stakeholders in football to discuss issues hampering the development and growth of the NPL and the game in the country. The participants were candid about the problems facing Namibian football. They deliberated on matters of funding and how to secure additional funding for the league and clubs. The issue of administrators, at league and club level, came under scrutiny with all the participants agreeing that ‘this is an area that needs improvement, while the statutes of the league and the clubs need revisiting’. Development of the game at all levels, from youth structures to life skills for players and progress within the ranks of the club, was also addressed. The issue around players proved to be a hot potato for the participants, but consensus was reached that the welfare of the players needs to be tackled as ‘a key priority area’. The participants bemoaned the fact that the league does not have enough games for the players and that more competitions are needed to be able to meet the minimum of 40 games per player per season. The image of the league was also discussed, as well as how important it is for the league to maintain a transparent and accountable positive image. A thought-provoking presentation was provided by Gareth Amos, from Interact Advertising and Communication, during a dialogue session on how the league can raise its profile to attract more funding. Vilho Namufinda from SCORE Namibia provided an overview on how clubs can utilise and build a volunteer base to support their structures. “I am very happy that we did this exercise, now we all know and our club members will be informed of where the league is heading. It is time for us to put our energies together for the good of the game,” concluded J. J. Doeseb, NPL Chairperson, at the end of the workshop. The 30 participants who attended the workshop were from 11 NPL clubs. Other participants came from the management committee, the finance committee, NPL main sponsor MTC, Hollards Namibia, FNB and partners SCORE Namibia, Interact Advertising and Communication and the Namibia Professional Players Union. A final summary will be provided at the NPL AGM slated for Saturday, July 24, for adoption. |
